The Marathon was the day after my long haul flight. It was a hectic way to go from holiday mode to work mode, but I couldn’t miss it. Working at the London Marathon again this year is so rewarding. When you actually get to stand right at the junction of mile 13 (half way point) and mile 22 (only a few more miles to go) and have a view of Tower bridge, its a fabulous working spot for a sports physio. Not that you get to notice much of the scenery once things start hotting up at 12 noon. Lots of cramp to deal with. Some people in agony, but still able to stand up after a good assisted stretch and say “that feels much better”. You have to get the balance right between being effective in your treatment, but not stopping them for too long. They need to keep the momentum going, so you cant relax too much on the side. Sadly, there are also decisions to be made about whether someone has to stop which is a tough call if they have managed to get most of the way through a marathon. I am already looking forward to next year!
