Rehabilitation is not a trendy word, but it stands the test of time. A little goes a long way in preventing the recurrence of pain. Rehab often needs to be continued for longer than the pain lasts. The exercises don’t take that long, usually 10 minutes, its more about the routine. So if you’re strengthening/stretching/balancing better, and start to feel less pain, carry on with those rehabilitation exercises.
As a rule of thumb, it takes about 6 weeks for initial strength gains, although proprioception (the sense of positioning, alignment and balance) can occur within a much shorter time. Your physio can help to assess the changes in strength, alignment, flexibility or balance and determine whether the exercises are working and if not, why not. In the mean time manual therapy (hands on) could assist the progression of the process, give you pain relief, and movement confidence.
